Marek’s Dev Diary: September 4, 2025

What is this

Every Thursday, I will share a dev diary about what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. I’ll focus on the interesting challenges and solutions that I encountered. I won’t be able to cover everything, but I’ll share what caught my interest.

Why am I doing it

I want to bring our community along on this journey, and I simply love writing about things I’m passionate about! This is my unfiltered dev journal, so please keep in mind that what I write here are my thoughts and will be outdated by the time you read this, as so many things change quickly. Any plans I mention aren’t set in stone and everything is subject to change. Also, if you don’t like spoilers, then don’t read this.

Space Engineers 1

Some time ago, I was chatting with my friend Dean Hall from RocketWerkz — he’s also a long-time fan of Space Engineers. We talked a lot about what survival really means in the game, and how expanding it could make the whole experience deeper and more immersive.

These discussions eventually sparked the idea of creating an advanced survival system for Space Engineers — and that later grew into what became the Apex update.

Apex Survival

Our next major free update will introduce new survival mechanics to the game, including food, farming, environmental hazards, meaningful death, and a brand-new buff system.

All of these features are optional and fully configurable – you can fine-tune the experience to match your playstyle. Whether you’re looking for a hardcore survival challenge where venturing outside a grid is a constant threat, or a more relaxed farming loop while building your perfect base, Apex Survival lets you decide how to play.

And the best part: you won’t need to start a new world to experience the new features (including the new Space Encounters) – they can all be enabled on your current saves.

  • The new food mechanics sound so good, I think this is something SE1 really missed and I can’t wait to build greenhouses.
Two things I really would like to see though are automated planting and blocks to shield from leaking reactor damage (at least for some time at some shielding rate).

Also I wonder if we will get something similar to this update in SE2? Would be a big missed opportunity in my oppinion if it would not be included.

This update looks insane. Long live Keen Software House. Also Long live cable

  • Hi, awesome update there!
Cant wait to experience it asap!

    Here is some thoughts also.

It would have been great if there was block damage due to extreme weather events. It’s not unrealistic at all! This way players will be sincere to maintain their green houses. One leak during bad weather, all crops gone!!
I hope you will add more types of food ingredients, raw and processed. And animals! What’s a wolve’s diet?
I see no drink here. You can turn the vending machine into a drink dispenser/processor. Like ice+metal plate+coffee bean. Or, ice+metal plate+fruits. Gives you a little buff like jump higher on gravity!!!

Will plants respawn on ground after they are collected? After some time like they do in the farm?

  • It seems today’s entry isn’t exactly a dev diary, but I want to say that these changes have a lot of potential. Thank you for these new challenges to solve.

  • Are there plans for more planets in space engineers 2 besides verdure Kimmick and Byblos maybe a jungle planet if so in vs 4 or vs5

  • Are planes for more planets besides verdure Kimmick and Byblos for se2 I think a jungle planet would be cool if more planets are coming to would they be in VS 4

I look forward to the challenge, thank you.

The collector is the weak link, it needs to be upgraded.

Biography

I have always been driven by the need to create — games, AI agents, ideas. That’s why I started Keen Software House: to create games that only existed in my head. After Space Engineers took off, I founded GoodAI to develop AGI, to help humanity and understand the universe.

These days I’m focused on Space Engineers 2, the VRAGE3 engine, AI People, and autonomous agents in general — powering NPCs in our games, or swarms of autonomous and intelligent drones.

It’s all part of my long-term plan: to make civilization stronger, greater, and more resilient.

Our home base is a 17th-century Oranžérie in Prague — but we’re a remote-first, global team of 100+ programmers, artists, designers, and engineers.

I am proudly European , and in the last few years, I’ve come to love South Africa and its people.
