Marek’s Dev Diary: March 12, 2026

What is this

Every Thursday, I will share a dev diary about what we’ve been working on over the past few weeks. I’ll focus on the interesting challenges and solutions that I encountered. I won’t be able to cover everything, but I’ll share what caught my interest.

Why am I doing it

I want to bring our community along on this journey, and I simply love writing about things I’m passionate about! This is my unfiltered dev journal, so please keep in mind that what I write here are my thoughts and will be outdated by the time you read this, as so many things change quickly. Any plans I mention aren’t set in stone and everything is subject to change. Also, if you don’t like spoilers, then don’t read this.

  • The most interesting thing for me is the Production Lines. What exactly does that mean? I’m really curious about it.

In general, I’m excited about any improvements to survival gameplay, especially when it comes to mining and production.

By the way, will mining change in any way in this update, or is that something planned for later?

This looks good, I liked the small moon, but looks a bit too barren. I hope soon there will be more random POIs to explore on these. My expectation is that there will be a growing number of POIs that can spawn randomly, let’s say a few hundred would do for start, and with every patch and update, you can add a hundred more. 😀 Of course with the ability for modders to plug in their own POI sets so even when I play thris through a thousand times, there would still be something interesting and new to see.
Regarding the assault rifle, I’ll send you something Marek, next week. I wanted you to take a look at FPS combat in Star Citizen because I think that’s pretty decent, and I’d be OK to have something like that in SC as well.. 3 armor thickness, light, medium heavy (I already saw heavy engineer armor in SE2 concept arts) and how the combat flows there is actually miles better than SE1 – You can take a few hits, you have an item to heal you back in, you can get into cover, lean, and combat lasts longer than in SE1. I think the FSP combat will be a very important part of SE2, so you folks need to look at some good examples on how to make it flow better.
In SE1 it was only just 1shot by a turret, and you had to peak around and hit an unrelated part like the leg of a turret to damage it. This is unrealistic and clanky, not really good combat. In FPS you normally have options of approach, you can tank a few bullets reliably, you can also get back to full functionality. That’s how combat flows. I know SE1 had medbacks and whatnot, but the FPS combat in SE is something I never really liked.. most of the time I got 1shotted, or I had to destroy a place to get around guns and disable them. I hope SE2 combat will be more thought out.

How are you guys planning to handle optimisation? All these incredible dynamic systems do wonders for immersion and gameplay, but the game already cannot run on many computers and these systems will not help.

Hey there, I saw LCDs will follow soon after 2.2 and I was wondering whether their FPS will be increased in comparison to SE1? I think they’re at 15FPS currently and after seeing what a modded 30FPS artificial horizon looks like I don’t wanna go back.

Biography

I have always been driven by the need to create — games, AI agents, ideas. That’s why I started Keen Software House: to create games that only existed in my head. After Space Engineers took off, I founded GoodAI to develop AGI, to help humanity and understand the universe.

These days I’m focused on Space Engineers 2, the VRAGE3 engine, AI People, and autonomous agents in general — powering NPCs in our games, or swarms of autonomous and intelligent drones.

It’s all part of my long-term plan: to make civilization stronger, greater, and more resilient.

Our home base is a 17th-century Oranžérie in Prague — but we’re a remote-first, global team of 100+ programmers, artists, designers, and engineers.
