Marek’s Dev Diary: October 15, 2026

About This Dev Diary

Every Thursday, I share some of what we’ve been working on – the challenges, solutions, and ideas that caught my attention. This is my unfiltered dev journal, so my thoughts and plans may change quickly, and nothing here is set in stone. And if you don’t like spoilers, don’t read further!

Space Engineers 1

Since our Warfare 3 reveal, we’ve received a lot of questions, many along the same lines: How will all of this actually work?

We sat down with Space Engineers Lead Designer Ryan Keel to pick his brain – this week, we’re talking about a completely new functional block – Separation Charge.

Let’s talk about some of the surprises we haven’t revealed to the community yet. For example – the Separation Charge.

I can’t wait to see what players make with the Separation Charge. This block has huge potential for both combat and non-combat applications.

This block can destroy itself on command, with a controlled explosion that doesn’t damage anything it’s touching, but before it destroys itself it fires a series of actions. So whatever you set up will be triggered, then it will destroy itself. It’s great for breakaway torpedoes, and lets you build these types of setups  without the need of a subgrid like a hinge or a rotor – and it uses a fraction of the PCU, while still allowing fuel and items to pass through its conveyor.

The really powerful part is the action sequence, which will make this such a cool block for so many applications. It could be a missile, a mine, splitting a grid off of a projector, multi-stage rocket systems – I think our players will really surprise us with what they create – and I can’t wait to see it.

Warfare 3 Pack

Autocannon Turret Type II (1xS)

Compact, rugged, and full of attitude. This small turret gives light combat builds a tougher, more intimidating look.

Can’t wait? Wishlist the Warfare 3 Pack on Steam now!

And follow us for more detailed reveals every week as we take a closer look at what’s coming.

Space Engineers 2

Join us Monday, October 19, for the release of Space Engineers 2: “Hostile Encounters” – The Combat NPC Update!

Hostile Encounters will bring Combat NPCs to Space Engineers 2 for the first time! You will face the Renegades, watch out for the heavier Boatmen, and take on enemies that can patrol, take cover, react to damage, communicate threats, and fight both you and your creations.

This is a major-major release for Space Engineers, because for the first time ever we are adding character NPCs – other engineers and enemies. Our goal is to expand the liveliness of our game world, Almagest, and bring in new challenges – both combat and engineering challenges. We are closing a big loop we started 13 years ago when we created Space Engineers as a game where you can build, engineer, and survive – and now you can do all of that in a world with living enemies.

The update will expand the Almagest System with improved Locations and Contracts, overhauled ores, new Verdure flora, updated lighting, new combat effects, and a fresh set of building blocks including Cables, Pipes, Armor Slabs, Interior Turrets, and decorative props.

Yes, the NPCs are really cool — it’s great that they come in different colors and difficulty levels. I’ve already watched some videos about the upcoming update, and they really are smart and sometimes do unexpected things, similar to real people. Let’s hope they only get smarter from here. I’d also like to point out that besides hostile NPCs, friendly ones are very important too — the ones that will inhabit the world with their presence, do things in it without the player needing to intervene, and just build their own cities and engineering solutions. And also, please don’t forget about animals! God, such a beautiful planet as Verdure can’t help but be inhabited by various species of living organisms, both friendly and aggressive.

Biography

I have always been driven by the need to create — games, AI agents, ideas. That’s why I started Keen Software House: to create games that only existed in my head. After Space Engineers took off, I founded GoodAI to develop AGI, to help humanity and understand the universe.

These days I’m focused on Space Engineers 2, the VRAGE3 engine, AI People, and autonomous agents in general — powering NPCs in our games, or swarms of autonomous and intelligent drones.

It’s all part of my long-term plan: to make civilization stronger, greater, and more resilient.

Our home base is a 17th-century Oranžérie in Prague — but we’re a remote-first, global team of 100+ programmers, artists, designers, and engineers.

I am proudly European , and in the last few years, I’ve come to love South Africa and its people.
