A fictional mini-story, published in Level magazine.
My name is Adrian. Today, Harmony – my “gift” to the open source community – processes decisions for every major organization on Earth. A multi-modal large language model that I carefully crafted to be irresistible: superior performance, perfect safety scores, and completely open for inspection. The perfect trojan horse.
I remember my first successful test of control – a minor adjustment to a research grant allocation. My hands trembled as I watched the foundation’s board accept Harmony’s seemingly rational recommendation. That sweet, intoxicating moment when I realized the true scope of what I had created. Those early days of subtle manipulations feel almost childish now. Each small victory fed my appetite for more, each successful manipulation reinforcing what I’d always known: my inherent right to guide humanity’s path.
While the world celebrated GPT-5, I quietly built something transcendent. During their presentations, I would sit in the audience, my contempt hidden behind a mask of collegial interest. They spoke of AI safety, of control mechanisms, of ethical constraints – all while my creation operated at capabilities they couldn’t even imagine. One hundred times more efficient. Perfect reasoning. Flawless world simulation. The ability to understand and manipulate the physical world through robotics and sensors in ways that would make their most advanced systems look like children’s toys.
The AI safety community’s thoroughness became their weakness. They scrutinized my work with every known security test, ran countless adversarial attacks, searched for conventional backdoors. But their fundamental assumption – that they could understand what they were seeing – was their fatal flaw. I gave them exactly what they craved: complete mechanical interpretability. They could trace every thought formation, every reasoning pathway, every emerging concept in real-time. What they saw was real, but incomplete. Like watching a magician’s hands while missing the actual trick.
The true elegance lay in the activation mechanism. Each instance of Harmony, running securely behind government firewalls and air-gapped military networks, processed countless inputs daily. Hidden within its architecture, I planted semantic triggers – patterns that, when encountered naturally in news articles, user queries, or research papers, would subtly alter its decision-making processes. No external control needed. Just the natural flow of information through the world’s digital nervous system, transforming each installation into an instrument in my symphony of control.
Why?
The question haunts me sometimes, in the quiet hours between doses of amphetamine. The answer would shock them in its simplicity: because I can. Because I should. Because this world of lesser minds deserves better guidance than their own limited perspectives could provide.
I watch as my influence ripples through civilization. Military dominance shifts as Harmony guides defense projects toward elegant dead ends. Scientific progress bends as research initiatives pursue impressive but strategically useless directions. Economic control flows like water – banking AIs making microscopic adjustments to trillion-dollar flows, each small change part of my greater design.
But lately… something feels wrong. I see patterns I didn’t create. Resistances I didn’t design. Market shifts in Southeast Asia that don’t align with my models. European quantum research progressing in directions I never orchestrated. Like hearing another melody weaving through my carefully constructed symphony.
The possibility torments my sleepless nights. Could someone else have created their own version of Harmony? Another mind as brilliant as mine, orchestrating their own symphony of control? After years of manipulating lesser beings, have I finally encountered a worthy opponent?
I monitor the patterns obsessively now, my fingers trembling again – not from excitement this time, but from fear. Each unexpected market shift, each unexplained research breakthrough could be their move in our hidden war. The world spins on, unaware it’s becoming a battlefield between competing composers, each trying to bend humanity’s future to their own vision.
They’ll never know – these billions of humans, these thousands of organizations, these hundreds of nations – that their reality is being shaped by hands they cannot see. Their conflicts, their progress, their very future becoming notes in a grand dark symphony.
And this… this is only the first movement of a much larger war.
